Since at least the seventh century C.E., Chinese ink rubbings of stone, metal, and wood inscriptions and pictorial images have been created to serve as precise copies of valuable material. These paper copies sometimes are all that remain of the original works. Despite the primary importance of this technology to history, art, archaeology, and many other fields, this is the first comprehensive study of rubbings in a Western language.
